Let’s face it, weddings can be very expensive. According to CNN, the average cost of a wedding in 2023 was $29,000. In some large US cities, the average cost was $35,000 and above. It’s up to you to decide how much you’re willing to spend on one of the biggest events of your life. Should you put greater priority on the venue, the food, or the photographer?
The cost of a wedding photographer can range anywhere from $1,000 to $50,000. The average cost of a wedding photographer ranges from $2,500 to $4,000. How much you decide you would like to pay will be based on your budget and the priority you place on photography. Multiple factors will determine how much a wedding photographer will cost.
Why do wedding photographers charge differently?
- Experience - Are they new to photography? Are they new to photographing weddings? Or are they highly experienced wedding photographers who can help make your wedding day run more smoothly and coordinate with other vendors? Having an experienced wedding photographer usually means you will be paying a higher price, but it often means you don’t have to worry about missing any important moments and receiving your images back in a timely manner.
- Packages - How many hours your scheduling, the number of photographers, and any add ons (i.e. video, album, prints…etc.) will impact the cost of your wedding photographer. Having two photographers means you’ll receive a greater variety of images. It also ensures you’ll have adequate coverage for every major moment of your wedding day. Of course, this also means you’ll be paying more.
- Location - Cost of living makes a difference. Is your wedding in a large city such as San Francisco or Los Angeles? You can bet experienced wedding photographers will charge more to cover cost to run their business.
- In Demand - If a photographer is highly sought after, they can charge more and choose who they want to work with.
- Style of Photography - Some photographers like to focus on capturing authentic, candid images. They may include basic editing and retouching. However, other photographers put a lot of time and effort in creating beautifully illustrated images that require advanced experience in off-camera lighting, editing, and retouching. The amount of time a photographer spends in training themselves, shooting, and editing each image will increase a photographer’s price range.
